Product Description:
Stan Getz The Oscar Peterson Trio: The Silver Collection
Digipak reissue of the complete original 1957 album, widely regarded as on of Getz' finest recordings. What we have here is not a good quartet, but an excellent one. In fact, it is the result of a well rehearsed trio: Oscar Peterson's celebrated unit with guitarist Herb Ellis and bassist Ray Brown, plus the beautiful sound of Stan Getz's tenor sax. Peterson and Getz display their truly creative interplay on these sides. This album constitutes their only studio album in a quartet format. The absence of drums adds a magical atmosphere to the warm sound of Getz's saxophone on the ballads, while on the swing tunes, Peterson's skill with his left hand combined with Ellis' rhythm guitar work leave no free space for a drummer. 12 tracks. Jazz as you would expect it (2010-02-04) : 5/5
I bought this CD as part of my quest to collect all works by Mr. Oscar Peterson. In this particular purchase, I got introduced to Stan Getz, a great artist indeed. Music is such a personal thing than it can be difficult to put in words how one feels about a particular recording and this CD is no exception, other than to say GREAT CD. I still have to find one "bad" recording by Mr Oscar Peterson, for this CD isn't one of them. I love this CD so much.
The best of Getz in a classic meeting (2009-12-28) : 5/5
This recording is more than just a rendering of some jazz standards and a couple of Stan Getz originals. The four players on this team are all classic artists, and all of them obviously were having a good day in the studio on October 10, 1957. Getz was at his smooth and lyrical best. Oscar Peterson on piano and Herb Ellis on guitar prove their skill and taste both on solos and on accompaniment. Ray Brown is on bass, solid as always. No drums, but you won't miss them. The performance is so good, you'll probably also overlook the fact that it was recorded in mono.br /The selections will give you some tracks for your romantic evening playlist, plus some blues and some things that jump. There's an hour of music here, and all the tracks are keepers for those who love small group jazz from this era. Nat Hentoff's original 1957 liner notes are included.
Memorable and amazing -- but be aware... (2009-10-07) : 5/5
... that it's a monaural ("mono") recording, which might sound plenty weird if you are using any sort of matrix surround process to listen. I had to turn off my Dolby Pro system to get appreciable sound, especially a very annoying slappy bass effect.
Underrated pairing (2009-07-29) : 4/5
Peterson and Getz cooked well together, providing that rarely informed bop which survives fifty years after, carefree dignity intact.
